How Writing Can Help You

If you keep working for others, you will be fuelling everyone else's dream but your own.

That being said, working for yourself and fulfilling your dreams is the more arduous path, so people don't often take it.

One of the first things you learn when you begin working towards yourself is that you are not a computer. You do need rest and need to stay healthy. This has been the case for me as well, and in an attempt to get a hold of my life and put my thoughts out, I decided to begin writing.

Just by taking this small step, I was able to open a world that is often not talked about and was unknown to me until now. Shedding some light on them here seemed like the perfect first post for this blog.1

The word 'writing' is often used in the context of pen and paper but for this particular blog, I use writing in the context of communication which can either be typed or handwritten.

1/ You Own This Part of Your World

Unlike most other things you interact with, whether in your career or elsewhere, you unreservedly own what you write. No one can take this away from you. All the effort, emotions, and thoughts you put out are from your very own self and thus often feel vulnerable to project them to the world.

2/ You Gain Control Over Your Thoughts

"Your mind is for having ideas, not holding them." — David Allen

Most thoughts you have during the day are gone by the night and forgotten by the next day. By writing your ideas down, you get to make sure that your ideas exist and can sometimes be worked on in the future. This seems like a straightforward but demanding solution to the problem. However, if you are concise and write down only what you wish to subsist, that goes a long way.

3/ It Is Relaxing

One of my main motives behind starting to write was that I found the whole experience therapeutic. In the busy schedule we find ourselves in every day, writing is the perfect activity where you get to spend some alone time. Collecting all your thoughts and working on them helps gain great satisfaction and also helps improve your mood a ton after a long day.

4/ You Act On Your Thoughts

"An object at rest continues to stay at rest, but an object in motion continues to be in motion." — Newton's First Law of Motion2

Of course, writing your thoughts down is the very first step of the immense process. It would help if you also worked on the ideas you get and put effort into them. Working on things is a long-term commitment but just taking the initial stage and putting your thoughts down makes a huge difference. It is better than not having anything to start from.

5/ You Provide Value To Others

If everything in life had to come down to one activity, it would be providing value. There is tremendous happiness to be gained from delivering value to others through your writing. By writing, you add one more activity to your arsenal through which you can provide value. It quickly expands into many other activities, which I will omit here as I do not wish to restrict anyone.

If you ever thought of starting to write, you definitely should, and I promise that it will help you out in more ways than you can imagine.

  1. As this is my first attempt at writing, I have yet to perfect it. Please excuse my writing style and inaccuracies, if any. I will love to hear some feedback if you have the time here.

  2. Newton's First Law of Motion, as the name implies, is a law in classical physics used for objects in motion. It does not correlate with writing or productivity; however, in this case, it is perfect and was used to show how it can relate to regular life.
